Historic meeting of the two largest academies of arts and sciences

24. 10. 2024

The World Academy of Arts and Sciences (WAAS) and the European Academy of Sciences and Arts (EASA) have joined forces for a global peace initiative. At the historic meeting in Maribor, distinguished representatives of both academies focused on the pressing challenges of the modern world.

The discussion began with the observation that today's world faces a series of interconnected crises, whose complexity and global scope prevent traditional diplomacy from successfully managing them. The solution lies in a comprehensive approach to peace diplomacy, which is why both academies launched a global initiative addressing researchers, artists, media, opinion makers, religious leaders, as well as educational and civil society institutions. The initiative, called Global Peace Offensive, aims to reduce confrontations through gradual, mutual steps to resolve conflicts, as these stakeholders have the power and responsibility for positive change.

Prof. Dr. Klaus Mainzer, president of EASA, emphasized that artificial intelligence brings opportunities for innovative solutions in favor of peace. WAAS Vice President, Donato Kiniger Passigli, presented WAAS's vision for a new peace initiative.

At the round table, experts focused on various areas that can contribute to achieving global peace, including artificial intelligence for peace, peace and diplomacy (both traditional and scientific), as well as the contribution of archaeology, nanoscience, and lexicography to peace.

WAAS President, Garry Jacobs, highlighted that solutions to global crises must be based on values. Scientists and artists bear the responsibility to promote world peace, especially in today's world where global digital communications and artificial intelligence have an increasing influence.

WAAS and EASA have committed to promoting peaceful coexistence and human security through education, research, and technological advancement. In doing so, they will collaborate with various stakeholders, including governments, to establish Ministries of Peace and incorporate peace content into educational programs.

The joint call of both academies is addressed to the academic community, intellectuals, and world leaders to support this vision with combined efforts and to establish new innovative activities that will contribute to building lasting peace at the global level.
