Framework Program Projects
Project leader: dr. Matej Mertik
Project duration: 1. 1. 2024 – 31. 12. 2025
Funder: Horizon Europe
Brief project description:
The main goal of the project is to prevent cancer incidence among adolescents.
The SUNRISE project is thus focused on preventing harmful behaviors during adolescence that lead to cancer development and represents a major health and social challenge in Europe. Together we aim to develop digital solutions for preventing all forms of carcinogenic consequences, based on new approaches such as social media campaigns, literacy and advertising training, educational games, social robot platforms, and similar. Within the project, an innovative digitally enhanced life skills program for primary cancer prevention through sustainable health behavior change will be implemented and evaluated.

Project duration: 1. 7. 2024 – 30. 6. 2027
Funder: Horizon Europe; Partnership Transforming Health and Care System
Brief project description:
Europe’s health and care systems must be transformed to effectively respond to the increasing number of frail individuals due to disease and age-related decline in abilities. Given the rising prevalence of frailty worldwide combined with the current workforce shortage, new solutions are urgently needed. The health and care system of the future must provide accessible and effective interventions that are cost-effective and simultaneously attractive to users.
In recent years, a new ICT-based care concept focusing on continuity of care and personalized treatment has been developed (within the previous AAL project »COCARE«). This concept uses simple technology (a pressure-sensitive sensor pad connected to a screen) for motor-cognitive therapy at home. It is known that motor-cognitive training effectively reduces frailty by improving physical and cognitive functions.
An excellent tool for delivering such training are so-called exergames. Exergames combine physical activity with cognitive challenges and have been proven to lead to a motivationally rich exercise experience. The software of the proposed concept enables personalized training (through an assessment system and progression algorithms within the game) and remote monitoring by a therapist.
