Your exchange at Alma Mater Europaea includes more than just studies!
At the beginning of the semester, we organize a Welcome Day for all incoming students. This event provides information about the teaching and learning process, academic formalities, and opportunities to meet other international students and explore facilities.
Upon starting lectures, students participate in an introduction week, beginning with the course »How to study for better learning outcomes In November, the traditional freshmen initiation takes place, followed by the festive Celebratory Academy in December, featuring guest speakers and live music. Our Erasmus+ tutors organize fun activities like brunches at Café Nana, wine tastings at the Old Vine House in Maribor, football matches (e.g., NK Maribor vs. NK Olimpija), and trips across Slovenia.
At Alma Mater Europaea, each incoming Erasmus+ student is paired with a student tutor, who offers personal support throughout the exchange period.
Tutors help students navigate academic procedures, settle into campus life, and discover the local community.
They are a friendly first point of contact — here to ensure you feel welcome, supported, and connected from your first day in Maribor.

Finding suitable accommodation can be challenging, but we're here to help! As an international student, options include student dormitories, hostels, or shared apartments. Prices vary by location and type.

Permits and residence
As an incoming Erasmus+ student, the visa and residence requirements depend on your nationality. Slovenia is part of the EU and Schengen Area, so procedures vary significantly between EU/EEA/Swiss citizens and third-country nationals. Erasmus+ exchanges typically last one semester (around 5 months), which exceeds the 90-day short-stay limit for non-EU citizens, so a long-term residence solution is usually required.
EU/EEA/Swiss citizens can enter Slovenia freely without a visa and stay for up to 3 months. For longer stays, such as an Erasmus+ semester, you must apply for a Temporary residence permit at the local administrative unit Maribor.
Required documents:
- Signed application form
- Valid passport or ID card
- Proof of enrollment: Confirmation of enrollment from Alma Mater Europaea
- Proof of health insurance: European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) or equivalent policy
- Proof of sufficient finances: A declaration stating you have at least €494.09 per month (e.g., parental support, Erasmus+ scholarship proof, or bank statement
- Proof of accommodation: Rental contract, dormitory confirmation, or owner's declaration
- Recent biometric photo (35 x 45 mm)
Non-EU citizens must secure entry and residence authorization before arrival. You must apply for the Temporary residence permit at the nearest Slovenian Embassy to your home city/ country. If visa-free (e.g., for up to 90 days), you can enter and apply in Slovenia.
Food subsidies
Slovenia offers subsidized student meals known as “študentski boni”.
All students, including Erasmus+ participants, are entitled to one or two daily subsidized meals.
Each voucher is worth €2.60 and can be used via a mobile app in restaurants nationwide.

Insurance
Before coming to Slovenia, please arrange appropriate health, accident, and liability insurance.
- EU/EEA citizens: obtain a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) covering basic healthcare. However, additional private insurance is recommended.
- Non-EU citizens: please arrange valid insurance coverage in your home country or with a Slovenian provider (e.g., Vzajemna, Generali, Triglav).
Cost of living
The cost of living in Slovenia depends on your lifestyle. You will need approximately:
- €300/month for food
- €300–500/month for housing and utilities
Due to the compact size of Slovenian cities, many walk or cycle, keeping transport costs low.
Banks & currency
Slovenia's currency is the Euro (€). Banks like Abanka, Nova KBM, SKB, and Delavska Hranilnica operate from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., with a lunch break. Some offer free or low-cost student accounts. You can withdraw from foreign accounts at ATMs, but check fees with your home bank.
Nightlife
Slovenia's cities offer diverse bars and clubs that are open late.
- Ljubljana: Explore Metelkova for alternative culture. Other spots include ČinČin (Tobačna), Božidar, Pritličje, Centralna Postaja, Circus, Shooters, Orto Bar (rock), Klub K4 (electronic), and Soho (jazz/ethno).
- Maribor: Poštna ulica has bars and restaurants. Popular clubs include KMŠ (dancing), Satchmo (alternative/blues), Fuego/Tacos (Latin), and Niagara (lounge).
Always prioritize safety: Watch your belongings and go out with friends.
