Gerontology is the science of aging processes and aspects of the elderly stage of life. Social gerontology, a branch of gerontology, focuses on the aging process of people from the perspective of intergenerational coexistence, ensuring social inclusion, and accepting one's own old age as an equally important period.
According to data from the Statistical Office of the Republic of Slovenia, the life expectancy at birth in Slovenia has increased by more than 10 years in the last 50 years. In the next 50 years, it will increase by another six or seven years. The first cycle Bologna study program Web and Information Technologies (VS) was designed by professors from industry and entrepreneurship as well as top international experts and researchers. The practical part of the Web and Information Technologies study program largely involves all important Slovenian ICT companies, and the program includes professors from the best universities such as the University of Technology in Krakow and Freie Universität Berlin.
Psychotherapeutic propedeutics at Alma Mater University is designed as a structured, formally accredited, and legally compliant introductory training in the field of psychotherapy, mental health, and disciplines related to psychotherapy. The program is delivered in a university environment, which means that the content is embedded in academic standards, professional quality, research work, and a credit evaluation system.
An advantage of the program is that participants obtain a publicly valid or formally issued certificate of completed requirements, containing information on the content, credit points, and acquired competencies. This is particularly important for those who wish to later apply this knowledge in further studies, advanced training programs, training in a psychotherapeutic approach, or in procedures for the recognition of previously completed content.
The program is delivered by accredited higher education teachers, experts, and practitioners from various fields of mental health, psychotherapy, psychology, psychiatry, ethics, research, and related disciplines. Participants become part of the university environment, where they have the opportunity for professional networking, further education, and collaboration with domestic and international experts.
Through the training, you acquire fundamental knowledge in the fields of psychotherapy, psychology, psychopathology, mental health, ethics, research, communication, and working with people. The program helps you understand human experience, behavior, development, relationships, mental distress, and the basic processes of helping. In addition to theoretical knowledge, you also develop practical and reflective competencies that are important for professional work with people: active listening, empathetic communication, recognizing distress, understanding the limits of competence, ethical conduct, and appropriate referral for further treatment.
Upon completion, you receive a publicly valid certificate stating the completed content, credit points, and learning outcomes, which may be beneficial for your further education, professional development, or the recognition of completed obligations in other academic programs, in accordance with the conditions of the individual institution.
Psychotherapeutic propaedeutics is designed to fulfill certain professional training requirements as defined by Article 9 of the Psychotherapy Activity Act.
By completing the program, the participant fulfills the requirement of acquiring basic knowledge in the field of psychotherapy and related disciplines, which refers to the first indent of the first paragraph of Article 9 of the Psychotherapy Activity Act. This stipulates at least 1,200 hours of basic knowledge in the field of psychotherapy and related disciplines, including at least 300 hours of training in the field of mental health and other professionally related activities. The program includes the content prescribed by the law for this part of the training, in particular knowledge in the areas of human psychological development, personality theories, the fundamentals of psychotherapy, the diversity of psychotherapeutic approaches, psychopathology, mental disorders, the ethical and legal aspects of psychotherapeutic work, and the basics of research work and research methodology.
The program also includes personal psychotherapeutic experience (30 hours from any psychotherapeutic approach), which constitutes partial fulfillment of the requirement under the third indent of the first paragraph of Article 9 of the Psychotherapy Activity Act.
Upon completion of Psychotherapeutic Propaedeutics, the participant receives a publicly valid certificate stating the completed content, scope, credit points, and other relevant information required for the recognition of completed obligations in further educational, professional, or licensing procedures at the Ministry of Health.
Completed Psychotherapeutic Propaedeutics in itself does not yet mean the immediate acquisition of a psychotherapist license. To obtain a license, the other requirements prescribed by the Psychotherapy Activity Act and the Chamber of Psychotherapists must also be fulfilled, including further training in the selected psychotherapeutic approach, the remaining personal experience, supervised practice, supervision meetings, final assessment, and other required obligations.
The program is open to candidates who have completed at least the first Bologna cycle, that is, at least 180 ECTS credits of higher education, in any field of study, or an equivalent qualification.
The program is particularly suitable for graduates and professionals in the fields of psychology, pedagogy, social work, healthcare, medicine, social pedagogy, special education, and other related disciplines, as it enables them to build on their knowledge in psychotherapy, mental health, and working with people.
Candidates from other fields of study may also enroll if they wish to acquire fundamental knowledge in psychotherapy, strengthen their professional development, or work in areas where understanding human experience, behavior, relationships, and mental distress is important.
For candidates who wish to later use the completed program within the framework of further psychotherapy education, studies, or requirements under the Psychotherapy Activity Act, it is recommended that they also check the prior education requirements before enrolling, as additional conditions regarding the level or field of education may be specified for certain further pathways.
Completed Psychotherapeutic Propaedeutics serves as formally recognized additional training in the field of psychotherapy, mental health, and working with people. It is useful for further psychotherapeutic education, for professional work in helping professions, for complementing competencies in education, social welfare, healthcare, non-governmental organizations, counseling work, human resources work, and other environments where understanding people and mental health is important.
The program itself, as a rule, does not mean obtaining a higher level of education, such as an undergraduate or master's degree. It is additional or supplementary education through which you obtain a publicly valid certificate of completed requirements, credit points, and competencies. In certain cases, this content may be recognized in further studies or other programs (including accredited programs), in accordance with the rules of the individual institution.
Yes, in certain cases it is possible to apply for the recognition of previously completed coursework, when it is comparable to the program content in terms of scope, content, learning outcomes, and credit valuation. This is particularly relevant for individuals who have prior education in the fields of medicine, psychology, pedagogy, social work, healthcare, or related disciplines.
Recognition is not automatic, but is assessed individually on the basis of evidence such as course syllabi, curricula, certificates of completed requirements, credit points, and other relevant documentation. We recommend an individual consultation for candidates, where it is possible to determine which content would be reasonable to claim and how to design a personal training plan.
Yes. The program includes not only theoretical foundations, but also practically applicable knowledge for working with people. Participants become familiar with the basics of professional communication, empathic listening, recognizing mental distress, understanding relational dynamics, ethical conduct, personal reflection, and appropriate referral.
A special value of the program lies in the fact that the content is delivered by habilitated lecturers and experts with practical experience in research, psychotherapy, psychology, psychiatry, healthcare, social welfare, and other related fields. This enables the integration of academic knowledge with concrete examples from professional practice.
Yes. The program is designed to also be suitable for employees and professionals who want to balance training with work, family, or other obligations. The modular structure enables gradual acquisition of knowledge and easier planning of commitments.
For participants who have specific goals, prior education, or have already completed certain content, individual guidance or a consultation with the head of the program is also possible by agreement. At such a meeting, it is possible to review your starting point, goals, and the possibilities for creating an individual training plan.
Yes. We recommend an individual consultation with the head of the program or the person responsible for the program for candidates who are not sure which path is most suitable for them. During the consultation, you can review your previous education, experience, career goals, and any possibilities for recognition of already completed coursework.
An individual consultation is especially useful for candidates who wish to continue in the direction of the psychotherapy profession, for those who want to check compliance with legal requirements, and for individuals considering further study or professional development programs.
After completing the Psychotherapy Propaedeutic, you can continue your journey by enrolling in training in your chosen psychotherapeutic approach. As a rule, this is the next key step on the path to the psychotherapy profession.
Training in a psychotherapeutic approach after completing the Psychotherapy Propaedeutic usually lasts from three to four years, while the entire path to independent practice of the psychotherapy profession depends on the chosen approach, prior education, obligations already completed, and the pace of entering practice and supervision.
Yes. The program is also suitable for individuals who do not necessarily plan a psychotherapeutic career, but wish to acquire high-quality knowledge for working with people, a better understanding of relationships, communication, mental distress, and helping processes. Such knowledge is useful in education, social care, healthcare, human resources work, leadership, counseling, non-governmental organizations, work with vulnerable groups, and other environments where professionals encounter people in challenging life circumstances.

Enrollment in the higher year is possible from the second half of August, candidates will be timely informed about the enrollment date by email.

The Study Affairs Committee will review all cases and decide, about which you will be notified in writing by mail.
Official hours of the department, telephone numbers and email addresses of the department in Maribor and Murska Sobota are published on the website http://www.almamater.si/uradne-ure-s120.
The library is open during the official hours of the office. Students should announce their visit in advance at the address referat@almamater.si. For any additional questions, they should contact the mentioned address.
The lecturers' contact/office hours are available on Moodle, under the course taught by the lecturer.
Lectures and exercises are held at all locations of Alma Mater Europaea – ECM: at the headquarters at Slovenska ulica 17 in Maribor, at the dislocated unit in Koper, Trubarjeva 1, the Nursing study programme is carried out in Murska Sobota, Lendavska ulica 9, and certain study programmes are also carried out entirely at the dislocated unit in Ljubljana, Neubergerjeva 31.
Attendance at seminar and laboratory exercises is 100% mandatory. Attendance at lectures is also mandatory; however, since for most courses it is possible to follow lectures via videoconference and later also on Moodle, in this case (if the student does not attend the lectures in person) the student must write a summary and submit it within 6 days after the lecture date to the relevant offices so that their attendance at lectures is recognized. The student can find instructions for submitting summaries on Moodle.
Exams must be registered through the higher education information system VIS. The student logs in with their username and password, selects the Exam tab, Exam registration (both for the exam and the colloquium), chooses the desired subject, then the exam date (deadline).
The student approaches the colloquium after completing the laboratory exercises. They can only register for the colloquium of their own group (a student from group D can only attend the colloquium of group D). A valid reason for attending the colloquium of another group is only a submitted medical certificate (sent by email to the office and presented to the colloquium instructor), and at the same time, the student must arrange the date with the exercise instructor and the office, as too many students at the colloquium prevent quality work. The student can only attend the colloquium once before each exam period.
Timely registration is possible no later than 7 days before the exam/test.
If you register later than 7 days, but not on the day of the exam, you will be charged €40.00 in administrative fees.
Registration on the day of the exam/test is no longer possible.
Timely deregistration is possible no later than 3 days before the exam/colloquium.
If you deregister 2 days or 1 day before the exam, you will be charged €40.00 in administrative fees.
Deregistration on the day of the exam/colloquium is not possible.
Clinical training is an active practical participation of students in learning bases, where the emphasis is on integrating knowledge acquired during studies into practice and gaining practical experience.

A student can apply for the thesis disposition through the Higher Education Information System (VIS) after completing all prescribed obligations of the first and second year (120 ECTS) and having no more than four exams left from the third year before graduation. In the master's study program, the student can apply when no more than 60 ECTS credits remain until the completion of the study.
The disposition is reviewed by the competent study affairs committee at its next session. Generally, complete applications submitted at least 14 days before the scheduled session date are considered. Otherwise, the schedule of the Study Affairs Committee sessions is published on VIS under the tab Materials/Other Materials/Graduation, Master's, Doctorate.
The validity of the title and disposition of the diploma/master's thesis is 12 months from the approval of the application by the Committee for Study Affairs.
Within this period, the student must prepare the final thesis and successfully defend it. If the student fails to complete it within the specified time, they must electronically request an extension for the preparation of the diploma/master's thesis via VIS, no later than one month before the deadline expires. The possibility of extending the title of the diploma/master's thesis is possible based on justified reasons, supported by appropriate evidence.
The request for extension of the validity of the final thesis disposition is charged according to the valid Alma Mater price list.
A first-year student submits an Application for the Area of Interest Research on form D1. This is reviewed by the Commission for Scientific and Research Work (hereinafter KZRD), which holds sessions approximately every two months. In addition to form D1, the student must also submit a CV in the Europass format and a bibliography. All of this must be submitted at least 8 days before the scheduled KZRD session. Students are informed about the dates of KZRD sessions at the beginning of the academic year.
In the second year, the student prepares a doctoral dissertation proposal, which can be submitted to the Alma Mater office once it is approved by the intended supervisor and any co-supervisor. The proposal is technically reviewed by the Alma Mater professional services and if all conditions are met, it is placed on the agenda of the next KZRD session. At its session, KZRD reviews the proposal and may return it to the student for revision. If the proposal is adequate, it appoints members of the commission to evaluate the proposal, which are approved by the Senate.
Before the commission members for the evaluation of the proposal, the student prepares a public presentation of the proposal and then the commission members prepare an evaluation on a prescribed form. Each member prepares a separate report, which is reviewed by KZRD and if positive, KZRD proposes to the Alma Mater Senate to approve the proposal, thereby also approving the dissertation title and the supervisor and any co-supervisor.
In the third year, the student prepares the doctoral dissertation and submits it to KZRD once the supervisor and any co-supervisor confirm that the dissertation is substantively adequate (form O3). The student submits the signed form O3 and 3 copies of the dissertation to KZRD. KZRD reviews whether the dissertation meets the minimum standards and appoints members of the commission to evaluate the dissertation, which are approved by the Senate. Usually, the members of this commission are the same as those who evaluated the proposal, and they have 2 months to prepare an evaluation of the doctoral dissertation. When the professional services receive all three (or in case of co-supervision, 4) evaluations, they place them on the agenda of the next KZRD session. If all reports are positive, KZRD appoints members of the commission for the doctoral dissertation defense, which are approved by the Senate. Within a maximum of 1 month after the appointment, the doctoral dissertation defense takes place, where the student receives a temporary certificate of doctoral completion. The official diploma is received by the student at the graduation ceremony, which usually takes place once a year in March.
Before appointing members of the committee for the defense of the doctoral dissertation, the student must submit an appropriate certificate of publication of a scientific article to the KZRD.
As appropriate, the publication of one scientific article in a journal indexed in SCI, SSCI, SCOPUS, or A&HCI or the publication of two scientific articles, which SICRIS and ARRS rules evaluate with at least 30 points and specifically in the field of the doctoral dissertation topic, is considered. Only articles where the doctoral candidate is the sole or first author are taken into account. A single article can be considered for at most one doctoral candidate. As a substitute for at most one article, which SICRIS and ARRS rules evaluate with 30 points, the publication in a scientific monograph (chapter in a scientific monograph) or a scientific monograph published by a domestic or foreign publisher from the ARRS list also applies. Publications from the enrollment of the doctoral candidate in the doctoral study are considered, whereby:
- original scientific articles 1.01 according to the COBISS typology are counted;
- any world language is considered a foreign language;
- for publications in journals with an impact factor, any language is considered a foreign language;
- articles must be published (for publications in journals with an impact factor, a certificate from the chief editor confirming the publication of the article is considered equivalent);
- articles where the doctoral candidate is the first or sole author are counted.
