List of Slovenian Secondary Schools is based on the results of the general and vocational matura exams and shows the success of gymnasiums and secondary schools. It does not necessarily reflect the overall quality of the schools.

The ranking was published in 2014 by Alma Mater Europaea University in cooperation with interested parents, based on official data from the National Examination Centre of the Republic of Slovenia (RIC). Data after 2014 have not been updated.

The term "best schools" is subjective, but this list is the only one based on verifiable and accurate matura results.

Description and Methodology

The list of Slovenian secondary schools ranks gymnasiums and other secondary schools based on the success of students in the matura exams over the last three years. Two key indicators are considered:

  • the percentage of successful graduates (in percent),

  • the overall positive success in the matura (calculated so that the highest achievement is valued at 100 points, others proportionally).

The scoring is based on the average results over the last three years:

  • the most recent matura contributes 50% to the total score,

  • the matura from the previous year 25%,

  • the matura from two years ago also 25%.

It is important to understand that this ranking does not measure the comprehensive quality of secondary schools. The quality of a school depends on many factors, such as:

  • knowledge and skills of students,

  • educational work,

  • extracurricular activities,

  • sports achievements,

  • use of technology,

  • relationships within the school community,

  • parent involvement and connection with the local environment,

  • success of students in further education or career.

Therefore, a high ranking only indicates the school's success in the matura exam, not necessarily its broader quality. The list is not a ranking of the best schools in Slovenia, but a display of success based on available data provided by the National Examination Centre (RIC).

Methodology

The list was prepared by a research group within Alma Mater Europaea University, based on data obtained from the National Examination Centre of the Republic of Slovenia (RIC). The data were provided under the Access to Public Information Act.

The following factors were used to calculate the points for each school:

  • 50%: results of the most recent matura (percentage of successful + average positive success)

  • 25%: results of the matura one year earlier

  • 25%: results of the matura two years earlier

Each year contributes its share to the final score, considering both the percentages of successful students and the average grades. If data are incomplete (e.g., missing results for certain subjects), only available data are included in the calculation. Results are mathematically adjusted so that the highest achievement is valued at 100 points, and all others proportionally.
